Visiting Regulations During Influenza Season

The basic policy of Northwest Hospital & Medical Center is to allow patient visits for the health and well-being of patients. A guideline for visiting hours is listed below to promote rest and health recovery. During these controlled hours the visitors must check in at the main hospital desk and be approved by the patients nurse before the Security Officer allows the visitor on the floor.

In consideration of the current flu Pandemic and to protect the health of patients, visitors, and staff through increased infection control measures, the visiting regulations will be more restrictive until the flu Pandemic is over. Patients will be asked to limit the number of visitors and duration of visits, to encourage anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms, recent exposure to a communicable disease, and all children to stay home.

  1. Visiting hours on the Hospital Nursing Units may vary with departmental specialties and the health status of the patient. If visiting hours are not designated for the unit it is encouraged between 8 am to 8 pm; however, visitors may visit the patient at any time. Units with designated visiting hours are as follows:

    • Childbirth Center – visiting hours are: 8:00 a.m.- 8:00 p.m.
    • Geropsychiatric Center – Designated visiting hours 1:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. every day. Family/Friends must arrange ahead of time to bring a pet in to visit a patient. (See Pet Therapy Programming Policy – Geropsychiatric Center)
    • Rehabilitation Center - Normal visiting hours are 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. every day.
    • Rehabilitation Center Note:
    • The rehabilitation patient’s improvement depends upon working in therapy without interruptions. Family and caregivers are encouraged to attend therapy sessions.

    • Friends and visitors who are not directly involved in your care should visit when therapy is not scheduled; in general after 4:00pm.

  2. Patients will be encouraged to limit the number of visitors to two people at a time. Families should be asked to stagger visits to accommodate this guideline and to keep the number of people in the waiting areas to a minimum.
  3. Patients will be encouraged to limit the length of time visitors stay in the hospital. Visitor overnight stays are discouraged.
  4. Visitors who have experienced a fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, skin rash, vomiting or diarrhea in the last 48 hours before a visit is planned should be discouraged from visiting until certain they will not expose the patient to more risk of disease.
  5. Visiting should be avoided if there has been a recent exposure to a highly communicable infectious disease; e.g., chicken pox, etc.
  6. Since children, teens, and pregnant women are especially vulnerable to H1N1 complications, and the highest rates of hospitalizations and death from H1N1 are in Americans 24 and younger, visitation of children is highly discouraged in all areas of the Childbirth Center.
    1. Additional visiting Guidelines for the Childbirth Center
      1. A letter will be given to all patients upon admission explaining the visiting policies.
      2. All visitors will be required to self-screen and sign in. If visitor has any any flu symptoms such as fever, sore throat, cough or runny nose they will be asked to leave.
      3. No children will be allowed in the Nursery area.
      4. Visiting privileges may be extended to infants and children based on patient wishes, except in the Nursery, as long as they are in good health, well behaved and the patient's condition permits young visitors. The children must be attended at all times by a responsible adult. Child care or adult child supervision is not provided by hospital or clinic personnel.

  7. Elevators designated for visitors are located in the lobby area.

Thank you for your patience and for helping us keep you healthy!
