Home Sleep Studies

A home sleep test is a modified sleep study that is used to help diagnose obstructive sleep apnea. Home sleep tests are only recommended for adults between the ages of 18 and 65 who are suspected of having moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea and who have no major medical conditions.

Sleep apnea is a condition in which one or more regions of a person's airway collapse at night. This causes breathing to either pause (apnea) or become very shallow (hypopnea). Home sleep tests offer a convenient, accurate and affordable way to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea, especially for those who would have a hard time scheduling a night away from home for a study in a sleep lab. Rather than monitoring by a sleep technician in a sleep lab, home testing is self-administered and uses a portable monitoring system equipped with a small recording device, sensors, belts and cables. You will be taught how to set up and use the system by one of the Northwest Hospital Sleep Center's sleep technologists or medical assistants.

Test Results
After your home sleep test is complete, the data gathered by the monitoring system will be downloaded, analyzed by a registered sleep technologist and interpreted by a sleep specialist.

If the home sleep test is inconclusive, or if another disorder is suspected, an overnight sleep study in the sleep lab may be required.

To find out if you are a candidate for a home sleep test, please contact the Northwest Hospital Sleep Center at 206.382.3504.
