Childbirth, Parenting, & New Baby Classes

In addition to the following classes, Northwest Hospital & Medical Center also offers general health education, support groups, and wellness resources. Call 206-368-1784 for a schedule and more information.

Private Instruction
You may meet with one of our educators for individual instruction and support by calling 206-368-1784.
Length: Two hours minimum
Cost: $100 for two hours, $35 per hour thereafter

Preparation for Labor
This class helps prepare first-time parents for a positive birth experience. Topics include labor and birth, relaxation, breathing techniques, cesarean delivery, and pain management options.
Length: Four weeknight classes, or one Saturday class
Cost: $95
Sign up for this class and attend Early Pregnancy, Breastfeeding Basics, Bringing Baby Home, and Parenting Your Infant at no extra charge.

Early Pregnancy
Now that you’re expecting a baby, learn what to expect during the next 6 to 9 months. This vital class provides expectant parents with information about fetal development, prenatal nutrition and health, sex during pregnancy, and a preview of what to expect during the hospital stay.
Length: Two hours
Cost: $10, or free with Preparation for Labor class.

Breastfeeding Basics
Breastfeeding is a natural biological function, but it is also a learned skill. Topics include: common breastfeeding hurdles and solutions, breastfeeding and returning to work, and suggestions about when to ask for help.
Length: Two hours
Cost: $10, or free with Preparation for Labor class.

Bringing Baby Home
This hands-on class takes parents into the realities of returning home with a baby. Learn about the mother’s healing process, basic baby care techniques, and the parents’ emotional and physical changes.
Length: Four hours
Cost: $20, or free with Preparation for Labor class.

Parenting Your Infant
This class addresses the common concerns of new parents including eating, sleeping, crying, and how to meet your baby’s needs.
Length: Two hours
Cost: $10, or free with Preparation for Labor class.

Infant CPR and Safety
Emergencies happen. This class provides valuable information on safety, and how to perform CPR and relieve an obstructed airway. Parents, grandparents, and others will develop skills for handling emergency situations.
Length: Three hours
Cost: $20/person, $35/couple

Boot Camp for New Dads
Babies and veteran dads help coach dads-to-be through hands-on infant care. Dads engage in straight talk about fatherhood and changing family relationships. This MENS-only workshop is fun, frank and a real eye-opener.
Length: Three hours
Cost: $15, dads-to-be only

Grandparents Class
Learn about various grandparent roles, modern maternity care, and current recommendations for baby care.
Length: Two hours
Cost: $20/person

Siblings Class
Accompany your child, ages 3-7, on a tour of the Childbirth Center. They’ll get a chance to talk about feelings they may experience, what a newborn baby can do, and their role as a big brother or sister.
Length: One and ½ hours
Cost: $12/child, $3/each additional child

Refresher Course
Every labor is different, and childbirth procedures change over time. In this class, expectant parents, who have delivered within the last 5 years, review labor coping methods, birth options, and pain control methods. Preparation for sibling adjustments and changes in family structure are also discussed.
Length: Three hours
Cost: $45
