U.S. News Ranks Northwest Hospital #6 in Seattle/Tacoma Metro Area
22nd annual rankings recognize hospitals in 94 metro areas and 16 specialties
Northwest Hospital & Medical Center has been ranked #6 out of 35 hospitals in the Seattle/Tacoma metro area in U.S. News & World Report’s 2011-12 Best Hospitals rankings, available online at www.usnews.com/besthospitals. The rankings, published annually by U.S. News for the past 22 years, will also be featured in the U.S. News Best Hospitals guidebook, which will go on sale August 30.
This was the first year the magazine calculated metropolitan-area rankings in addition to its national rankings. Besides the 140 nationally ranked Best Hospitals, U.S. News identified 587 hospitals in the 94 metro areas that met standards for strong performance in one or more of the 16 Best Hospitals specialties.
According to US News & World Report, Northwest Hospital was designated as “high performing” in a variety of specialty areas, including neurosciences and gynecology. The publication also highlighted the hospital’s excellent patient safety record and commitment to reducing accidents and medical mistakes.
Hospitals in the UW Medicine health system performed especially well in the metropolitan area rankings, with UW Medical Center named No. 1, Harborview Medical Center No. 2, and Valley Medical Center tied with Northwest Hospital for No. 6.
Hard numbers stand behind the rankings in most specialties—death rates, patient safety, procedure volume, and other objective data. Responses to a national survey, in which physicians were asked to name hospitals they consider best in their specialty for the toughest cases, also were factored in.
