The Sports Medicine Clinic Turns 50
The Sports Medicine Clinic has been a fixture of Seattle’s active community for five decades, treating everything from sprains and strains to fractures and foot pain in celebrity athletes, future sports stars and weekend warriors around the Seattle area. Today, with a staff of 12 physicians and 7 physical and occupational therapists at the clinic’s branches in Ballard and the Northwest Outpatient Medical Center, The Sports Medicine Clinic provides the latest medical, surgical and therapeutic care not only for sports injuries, but for accidents, illnesses, work injuries and primary care.
In 1963 Dr. Keith Peterson, a graduate of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri and an avid athlete, started a practice in Ballard that was soon to become known as The Sports Medicine Clinic. The clinic was one of the first multidisciplinary sports medicine clinics in the country. Most clinics that treated athletes at that time were orthopedic facilities. The Sports Medicine Clinic grew quickly, adding registered nurses and an X-ray technologist to the practice, and bringing together specialists in primary care, sports medicine, orthopedics, kinesiology, physical therapy, athletic training, sports psychology, podiatry and nutrition to create a one-stop-shop for active people throughout Seattle.
In 1978, the practice moved into its present location on Northwest 54th Street in Ballard, a 10,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility. In 1995, The Sports Medicine joined forces with Northwest Hospital in an affiliation continues to this day. The clinic expanded to a new location at the Northwest Outpatient Medical Center in Northgate in 1999 and has continued to grow ever since, even converting a large trailer into a mobile clinic for use at sports matches and events.
For decades, The Sports Medicine Clinic has been providing care for local colleges such as Seattle Pacific University and Bellevue Community College, along with sports participants from numerous high schools. The clinic has treated a number of professional and semi-pro athletes over the years, from local hydroplane racers at Seafair to members of the hard-hitting Rat City Rollergirls roller derby league. But the most famous of The Sports Medicine Clinic’s clients come from the Seattle Mariners baseball team, treated by the clinic’s doctors since the mid-1980s.
From the beginning, The Sports Medicine Clinic has been an active part of the Seattle community, providing a team approach to the prevention, care and rehabilitation of injuries and disease. Its practitioners maintain a progressive attitude toward patient care and look forward to many more years providing services that benefit patients and the health of the community as a whole.
